Advanced MRI in Greenville and Washington County

Delta Regional Medical Center Imaging Services

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) technology has been around for a number of years. Now, with the new 1.5 Tesla MRI unit at Delta Regional, and the greatly increased speed with which its images are taken, we can clearly see parts of the body that move, such as the organs in the chest, the organs in the abdomen, and vessels throughout the body. These new “real-time” images give physicians advanced tools for diagnosing an illness or injury.

MRI technology uses no radiation, is painless, and now can provide critical diagnostic information without surgery.

Preparing for MRI

MRIs are noninvasive and do not require any type of injection. This imaging test is usually done on an outpatient basis, so you can arrive for the test and return home the same day. A typical MRI lasts between 30 minutes to an hour.

Wear light clothing and leave jewelry and other valuables at home. Make sure you remove all metal from your person as these could interfere with the MRIs magnets. Notify the doctor if you have any implants. There are no dietary restrictions for an MRI, so you can eat and drink before your exam unless your physician told you not to. Sometimes dietary restrictions are imposed if a contrast agent will be used with your test.

The MRI is a large tube-like machine. You will lie down on a table that slides into the tube. Though the tube is open on both ends, the space is somewhat small and noisy, which can be difficult for patients with claustrophobia. There will be an intercom inside the MRI so you can talk with the physician during the exam. A sedative can also be provided if you are having a difficult time in the tight space of the machine.
