Hope and Healing for Chronic Wounds

The Wound Healing Center at Delta Regional Medical Center was established to care for patients with chronic wounds that have not responded to traditional treatment methods. Its mission is to improve the quality of life for these patients while reducing the incidence of amputations. Since its founding, the Center’s overall healing rate has been 80%.

The staff of The Wound Healing Center is comprised of nationally trained wound care physicians, nurses, and technicians who follow a program of care specifically designed for each patient. A patient’s treatment program includes visits to the Center for treatment sessions and dressing changes, as well as instruction on home wound care. For some patients, treatment includes hyperbaric oxygen, which uses 100% oxygen breathed at higher than normal pressures to enhance healing in problem wounds.

Types of Wounds that May Benefit from Treatment at The Wound Healing Center:

  • Diabetic Ulcers

  • Pressure Ulcers/Decubitus

  • Venous Stasis Ulcers

  • Chronic Refractory Osteomyelitis

  • Soft Tissue Radionecrosis

  • Arterial Ulcers/Ischemic Ulcers

  • Surgical Incisions

  • Chronic Wounds that have persisted for more than four weeks without significant improvement

At The Wound Healing Center, chronic wounds are treated much differently than newly acquired wounds. Healing of chronic wounds is often delayed by hydrogen peroxide, betadine, and whirlpool therapy. Other factors that hinder healing include smoking, poor nutrition, infection, poor circulation, and uncontrolled diabetes. In addition to the treatment of chronic wounds, the Center educates its patients about proper home care and life-style changes that can help with healing and prevention. Patients are accepted at The Wound Healing Center by self-referral or by physician referral. Patient evaluations are provided free of charge.
