PET - CT Scanner

NEW PET/CT SCANNER OFFERED AT DELTA REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER

Starting Tuesday, May 26th PET/CT Scan will be available at Delta Regional Medical Center’s main campus.  A PET/CT Scan is Positron Emission Tomography, also called PET imaging or a PET scan, is a type of nuclear medicine imaging.  Nuclear medicine is a branch of medical imaging that is noninvasive.  Noninvasive nuclear medicine uses small amounts of radioactive materials to diagnose or treat a variety of diseases, including many types of cancers, heart disease, brain abnormalities, and certain other abnormalities within the body.

A PET scan measures important body functions, such as blood flow, oxygen use, and sugar (glucose) metabolism, to help doctors evaluate how well organs and tissues are functioning.  By identifying changes in the body at the cellular level, PET imaging may detect the early onset of disease before it is evident on other imaging tests such as CT or MRI.

CT imaging uses special x-ray equipment, and in some cases a contrast material, to produce multiple images or pictures of the inside of the body. These images can then be interpreted by a radiologist on a computer monitor as printed images.

The new service offered at DRMC will be a combined PET/CT scan, which provides images that pinpoint the location of abnormal metabolic activity within the body. This combined scan has been shown to provide more accurate diagnoses than the two scans performed separately.  Both scans together produce a greater detail with a higher level of accuracy; because both scans are preformed at one time without the patient having to change positions, there is less room for error.

David Wallace, Director of Radiology at DRMC says, “The PET/CT scanner will help with earlier diagnosis for cancer, accurate staging and localization for treatment planning, and precise treatment and monitoring for cancer.  Patients will now be able to have this technology here rather than traveling out of town for these critical tests.  This will be a great service to the Delta.” To start, this new service will be offered once a week on Tuesdays.  For appointments call 1-866-245-5995.
