DRMC Adds 64-Slice CT Scanner
Delta Regional Medical Center recently added the Toshiba Aquilion 64 slice CT Scanner to its radiology department, thus allowing DRMC to now offer a number of innovative diagnostics procedures. Drawing the most interest at this time is automated cardiac scanning, a non-invasive and highly accurate alternative to catheterization.
“DRMC staff cardiologists Dr. Ben Folk, Dr. Ken Hahn, Dr. John Herzog, Dr. Michael Mansour, and Dr. Norrapol Wattanasuwan will find the new scanner a useful tool to add to their diagnostic capabilities. With the PACS on-line radiology system, physicians can see these heart images in their own offices,” stated Dr. Steven Chapman, DRMC Cardiovascular and Thoracic surgeon. “We hope that the accessibility of the this equipment for people of the Delta will encourage residents to be proactive in seeking screening by their primary care provider for heart disease.”
Cardiac computed tomography (CT) angiography, also known as coronary CT angiography, is an x-ray examination that allows physicians to noninvasively determine whether fatty or calcium deposits have built up in the coronary arteries. Because these arteries supply blood to the heart muscle, areas of buildup, called plaque, can cause a heart attack/stroke.
Cardiac CT angiography uses a fan-shaped, thin x-ray beam that passes through the body at several angles to allow for cross-sectional images. The corresponding x-ray transmission measurements are collected by a detector array, digitized into pixels, and rendered into a three-dimensional image for viewing on a computer monitor. Today, 64-slice CT scanners such as the Toshiba Aquilion 64 at Delta Regional Medical Center provide improved temporal resolution, which should lead to lower motion artifacts and possibly higher diagnostic rates.
For more information on the new scanner call David Wallace, Director of Radiology at Delta Regional Medical Center, 662-725-2434.
