Delta Regional Medical Center Urges the Community to Take Action:
Oppose the Proposed Tax on Hospitals

Local community hospital advocates for quality and affordable healthcare

Greenville, MS Delta Regional Medical Center (DRMC) is urging members of the Delta and surrounding communities to oppose the Mississippi State Legislature’s Senate Bill (SB) 3212 to tax hospitals.

According to The Mississippi Hospital Association (MHA), the Division of Medicaid is predicting an $86 million deficit for the current fiscal year and is also projecting the need for $168 million more than the current appropriations for fiscal year 2009. The Mississippi State Senate is attempting to tax hospitals (with SB 3212) to cover the shortfall.

According to MHA President Sam Cameron, “Hospitals exist to serve our community, but we have to be able to keep our doors open – to make payroll, to have money available for capital and technological improvements, to continue to provide much-needed services, like emergency care, that often end up costing money to operate but are critical to our communities. Increased taxes, assessments and regulatory requirements on hospitals are ultimately passed down to the healthcare consumers.”

The legislative session will come to a close on Saturday, April 19, 2008, giving the community less than a week to take action and advocate for affordable and quality healthcare.

According to DRMC CEO Ray Humphreys, “DRMC is urging citizens to join our efforts by emailing or calling your State Senators and urging them to oppose Senate Bill (SB) 3212. This is a grassroots effort to help protect our hospital and our state’s healthcare system. DRMC, along with more than 100 of our state’s other hospitals, is concerned about the implications of a potential decision to tax hospitals.”
