Delta Regional Medical Center Announces the Opening of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Greenville, MS – Delta Regional Medical Center announces the upcoming opening of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) scheduled for July 2010.  DRMC is the only hospital in the Delta Region to offer NICU services.  A NICU provides specialized care to babies who are born prematurely, who have problems during delivery or who develop problems while still in the hospital. There are three levels of care classified by the American Academy of Pediatrics, Level I-III.  DRMC has been operating as a Level II nursery, but with the appointment of a Neonatologist, we will now operate as a Level III NICU.  This means: a hospital neonatal intensive care unit organized with personnel and equipment to provide continuous life support and comprehensive care for extremely high-risk newborn infants and those with complex and critical illnesses. DRMC will provide care for infants with birth weights of more than 1000 Grams (2.2 lbs) and gestational age of more than 28 weeks. These babies and high-risk OB patients are currently being transferred to The University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. They will now be able to stay at DRMC.

DRMC’s new Neonatologist, Dr. Madhusudhan R. Pabbathi, is joining DRMC to provide care to these special needs babies.  Dr. Pabbathi completed his Pediatrics Residency at Louisiana State University Health Science Center in Shreveport, Louisiana and his Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee.  Dr. Pabbathi says, “I look forward to practicing as a neonatologist at DRMC and making a difference in the lives of newborns in the Delta.  I will fight to decrease the infant mortality rate here in the Delta.” The Mississippi Delta has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the country.

Tracy Killebrew, RN, MSN will serve as the Director of the NICU.  Tracy states, “After three years of planning and organizing for this NICU service, I am so very excited to see this dream become reality! It will be great to be able to treat our sickest little ones right here in the community; family involvement is paramount in the survival of our tiniest patients so now we are going to make that possible! We look forward to the growth this will bring to the hospital and to the Delta. It has been a team effort in getting us to this point and I thank everyone!”

Please join us for the NICU open house and ribbon cutting Thursday, July 8 from 4:00p.m. to 6:00p.m. on the 4th floor of the main campus at DRMC.
