DRMC, MRSA and the Community
Delta Regional Medical Center’s Infection Control Director Sharon Henderson had been directing a number of initiatives to help with community infection control. “With all the information in the news this fall about Community Acquired Infections and especially the national news about staph outbreaks, we felt we needed to get involved on a community level,” stated Henderson. A team met in October made up of DRMC personnel from Nursing, Pharmacy, Quality, Rehab, Lab and Marketing to discuss ways to help stop the spread of infection in the community.
The first activity was a meeting of all area school nurses that was held at the Pavilion on November 2. The meeting was led by Henderson in a discussion format. Each school shared information about and prevention activities at their location. DRMC staff provided resources to the schools and offered additional support as needed. Other community education activities have included:
• Infection Prevention information posted on the DRMC Website
• Radio and TV talk show interviews held about preventing the spread of infection
• DRMC “on hold” message features a recorded message about infection control
• CME credit class on Infection on December 10 at DRMC was open to all Delta healthcare professionals
• Press releases and infection prevention information were sent to local media.
“Of course inside our own walls we monitor infection control with our team members on a constant basis. We also supply patient and visitor safety information about infection control in several ways, and encourage our patients and visitors to take a role in fighting the spread infections. The admission packets, and Speak Up Brochures in our waiting areas provide infection prevention information for both patients and guests. Posters on the wall of each patient room instruct the patient to ask their providers if they washed their hands. But we wanted to carry safe practices into the community as well,” stated Henderson. “Don’t forget the number one way to stop the spread of infections: WASH YOUR HANDS!” And Sharon will be watching to be sure you do!
