Brush up On the Facts about Cholesterol

Brush up on the latest facts regarding one of the major risk factors for heart disease.

Unhealthy blood cholesterol levels contribute directly to the No. 1 killer of American men and women-heart disease. However, there is good news. This risk factor can be modified. The risk factors that we can do something about are high blood pressure, smoking, lack of exercise, undesirable cholesterol level, obesity, diabetes and stress.

When you have a blood test to determine your cholesterol level, the physician will most likely ask that the results be reported in three different measurements: total, high density and low density. The HDL or high density lipoprotein is the 'good cholesterol' and seems to help protect against heart attacks. The LDL or 'bad cholesterol' is responsible for cholesterol deposits building up in the arteries of the body.

The following is a list of nine great ways to get your blood fats under control:

  1. Reduce excess body fat.
  2. If you drink, do so in moderation.
  3. Don't Smoke.
  4. Eat more fiber.
  5. Exercise.
  6. Limit your dietary cholesterol intake.
  7. Limit the saturated fat in your diet.
  8. Be happy and make time to relax.
  9. Take medication if you must.
