DRMC Reaches Thousands With Heart Healthy Message During February

DRMC celebrated February’s American Heart Month with one of the most ambitious calendar of events to date. Partnering with the City of Greenville, the YMCA, The Greenville Clinic, the Greenville Arts Council, Delta Children’s Museum, Junior Auxiliary of Greenville, and Junior Women’s Club, DRMC reached over 2,000 Greenville citizens with its message of prevention and treatment.

Mayor Heather Hudson proclaimed February 8 as “Wear Red Day” for the City of Greenville in honor of Heart Month. In a collaborative effort to promote exercise as a vital part of a heart healthy lifestyle, the YMCA with DRMC posted signs on exercise equipment throughout the Y facility touting the heart healthy benefits. Together, the Y and the hospital hosted a 5K Fun Run/Walk and 1 MI Fun Run for kids and brought the month to a close with the first “Leap for Life” community outdoor aerobic class held on February 29 at Schelben Park.

Working with the assistance of the Greenville Arts Council, area third graders were asked to “Draw from the Heart” and portray their vision of a healthy lifestyle. Dr. Kathryn Lewis, Executive Director of the Greenville Arts Council worked with the schools to coordinate the art project. Students from Armstrong Elementary, Manning Elementary and Our Lady of Lourdes submitted work which will be on display at this year’s “Art for Heart” charity benefit.

A joint venture with Delta Children’s Museum and Junior Auxiliary of Greenville provided DRMC a venue for educating children on the importance of eating healthy and exercising at an early age. The Carousel Trail to Feeling Well engaged third graders with interaction at five “stops” on their trail all pertaining to different aspects of health, hygiene, nutrition, safety and exercise. At the end of the trail, each child was rewarded with a ride on the Carousel. DRMC provided age appropriate heart and health material, pencils, band-aid holders and stickers.

A series of six  educational “Lunch and Learns” featuring Dr. Ken Hahn, Dr. John L. Herzog and Dr. Norrapol Wattanasuwan, Pam Perkins, MSN, Beth Eubank, CFNP and Diann Morgan, CFNP were held over the course of the month. A myriad of cardiovascular topics were discussed and attendees were treated to the added bonus of visiting with lunch sponsors. Material provided by the American Heart Association as well as DRMC Cardiac literature was provided to each participant.

Dr. John Turner IV, Cardiac Anesthesiologist spoke to a crowd of 300 at the Forum for AgroMedicine addressing the topics of Metabolic Syndrome and Cardiovascular Disease. Dr. Turner provided the Forum participants with medical treatment options, healthy eating tips, and lifestyle changes necessary for lowering cholesterol, reducing the risk of a cardiac event and improving overall health. DRMC team members were on hand providing cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure and BMI screenings. Dr. Turner also appeared on “Mornings with David Lush” News Talk Radio WNIX 1330 expounding on the epidemic of cardiovascular disease found in the Delta.

Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) indicate that Mississippi has more cardiovascular disease than any other state in the U.S. according to their website at www.cdc.gov. The 10 Delta counties have the highest per capita rates in the state. Dr. Turner has dubbed Greenville as Ground Zero for Heart Disease in the US. “More that 75% of us have risk factors for Heart Disease,” said Dr. Turner. “Risk factors include obesity, smoking, diabetes, family history, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and sedentary lifestyle.”

“These staggering statistics are what keep us driving forward to offer complete Heart Disease diagnostics and treatment at DRMC,” stated Ray Humphreys, CEO. “Since our mission is to improve the health of the communities we serve, and heart disease is epidemic in our community, we feel a strong sense of responsibility to offer access to these services locally, in Greenville.” DRMC’s current expansion includes construction to outfit the former burn center into a Heart and Vascular Center.

Delta Regional will continue to keep the “spirit” of heart month going throughout the year by continuing the educational series of lunch and learns and community outreach programs.
